Shino Glazes
The main characteristic of Shino Glaze is of a satin-like white color, occasionally with bright, red – orange or black spotting, a result of carbon trapping in the firing process.
Shino glazes are a type of glaze known for their beautiful milky white to orange colours and fleshy textured surfaces. Originally from the Mino region of Japan, in the 16th century.
Traditionally fired in anagama kilns using a reduction atmosphere, Shino glazes benefit from a long firing process with slow cooling. This unique firing method contributes to the glaze’s characteristics.
Modern reduction firings in Gas fired kiln give similar results and are a favourite glaze of collectors and potters
