The Crystalline Glaze & Other Glaze Information

How do the crystals appear?

A: The crystals grow in the glaze as a chemical reaction during the firing, this is a procedure that makes each pot as unique as we are. This glaze type was developed in England at the turn of the last century, but discarded then because the high fluidity caused difficulties in firing, resulting in very high losses. The crystals are formed by the interaction of a number of minerals with silica (the glass former) and zinc (the flux). Crystal development occurs during the cooling cycle, with a wide variety of shapes and sizes from the micro crystal, similar to adventurine, to the macrocrystal which can be up to 75mm across. Colour is derived from the addition of various metal oxides - gold from iron, green from copper, pink from manganese.

Does the glaze contain lead or other poisonous minerals?

A: The glaze on the inside of the pot is a very simple Felspar, silica glaze and contains NO colouring oxides or heavy metals like lead.

All our pots are fired to cone 10 or 1300 deg c and lead is not used in high fired Glazes. We create and mix all our own Glazes from base materials. So we know exactly what is in the glaze.

Lead and other leachable metals are used in low fired glazes at earthen ware temperature. This should be taken in to account with imported products where safety and education are not as high as they are here.

Interesting note - the Australian government banned the use of lead in all ceramic glazes for domestic ware (such as our ceramic water filters). Above all, lead is not used in any high fire glazes - such as ours.

The Water Filter Details

How fast does the gravity fed candle filter water (Doulton or SCP Filter)?

A: Water is filtered at a rate of 1 - 1.5 litres per hour but will depend on the quality of water you are using.

How long does the filter last?

A: 2000 litres or 12 months e.g if you top up 3 times daily (breakfast, lunch and dinner = 6.6L / day) 6L divided into 2000L gives you 333 days of clean drinking water before you a due to replace your filter again.

How much water will one water filter hold?

A: A very important point to keep in mind when measuring the water filter is that they are all hand made. Each ceramic water filter is unique in its own right, despite the fact we do follow a template.

The water filter pots are all 12 to 15 litres. Due to the fact they are handmade, the sizes vary too much to be precise.

It is important to note that both of the filters we supply will filter 1 litre of water per hour. Technically, you can access 24+ litres of filtered water in a day. The volume of the pot is irrelevant when taking into consideration the filter speed. For example, if filling 3-4 times per day (at breakfast, lunch, dinner and before bed) you will have 6-8 litres available to you throughout the day. We fill ours 3 to 4 times a day (about 6 or 8 litres) which provides plenty of drinking water and for tea and coffee.

Do the filters completely remove fluoride from the water?

A: We do list technical specifications on the SCP Fluoride Plus Filter here and the Doulton Super Sterasyl Filter here. If you require further information, we do recommend contacting the manufacturer directly as we can not supply and further details unfortunately.
